For reasons (American), I have been more in the mood to play bad, mediocre, and sometimes even good video games than to read, but my beautiful cat continues to demand his tithe... I've read a few books. Most of post will be devoted to descending into a hater fugue state.

Books I'm in the middle of: How Should a Person Be by Heti (enjoying, finding it funny, I had a funny disagreement with someone about the value of Heti's work that I am excited to write about in a blog post where I can take multiple L's at once instead of collecting them one-on-one), The Magic Mountain by Mann (I GUESS I'M UNDERSTANDING WHY HE'S A HIT), Sula by Morrison (she's doing it yet again), Uncommon Carriers by McPhee... I think it's about time I pick up another Malcolm for my spirits and to extend the dominion of the letter M in my reading list. Do you think I should change my pen name to start with m as an homag

In order of completion:

The Third Realm, Knausgaard )

Civilization and Its Discontents, Freud )

Sleepless Nights, Hardwick )

On the Calculation of Volume, Balle + Omniloop (2024) )

I find it hard to forgive a badly done ending in a movie, even though there are plenty of books where I go, "Well, the last hundred pages were bad, but I liked the first five hundred a lot!" or even, "the first 80 pages were good and probably what got this author an agent… too bad about the remaining 270 pages of this.” A bad movie ending makes me soooo much angrier and less generous towards the film, even though a film may have sooo many more technical accomplishments.

I just finished Nightbitch the movie and lol, classic case of me going in knowing I wouldn't love it and finding even more things to not like once I was there. I find it SO funny how this movie is like, “the city artists are GAY and can’t understand the REAL pain of being stifled by a bad marriage and motherhood AND having to live in the suburbs…” It’s important for Amy Adams to be a mother and an artist, and not just a mother but a mother who loves being a mother and who feels Solidarity with other moms (take that!) AND she’s an artist who’s pushing boundaries of Art… I guess that last element is important because it’s an easy way of showing that she’s successful and that LADIES, mothers, WOMEN all over the world, you CAN have it all… I walked away from this thinking to myself, "Well, this is the power fantasy of the mediocre, I guess," and then felt bad for thinking it.

Quick off the cuff impressions:
- Polite Society, dir. Manzoor: I liked this a lot! spunky first novel energy in the good way (I have identified an issue and I’m going to DRAMATIZE it with KUNG FU). Good time, beautiful costuming… Ria, you’re gay
- Cost of Living, Maloney: solid meh, imo. “I bet the author entered this to the graywolf nonfiction contest.” Was almost surprise it hadn’t won it. it’s the kind of essay collection written by someone who has an MFA and a numb kind of horror of the American health system and a voyeuristic eye. “Look at this. Doesn’t it suck?” Thanks… I guess it’s the kind of essay collection one writes after a period of difficulty and suffering, with a goofily remote detachment - like, oh, okay, we fucked things up? Was that all??
White Negros, Jackson: Thoughtful and surprisingly fun collection exploring how blackness is used as a cultural signifier independent of black culture as a living and present culture. imo the overarching thesis has been stated before but the author branches through pop music, literature, and the internet in a way that’s consistently interesting + challenging
Xenogensis saga, Butler: I’m on the last novel and this shit slaps… I’m scared all the time lskghgh
